If you are looking for a sport that helps improve your health while being fun and accessible for all ages, Pickleball is the perfect answer. So, what is Pickleball and why has it become a global trend? Let’s explore it with V-Lab Vietnam!
Pickleball is an exciting combination of Tennis, Badminton, and Table Tennis (Ping-pong). This sport uses a solid paddle and a perforated plastic ball, played on a court the size of a badminton court with a net set low like in tennis.
The Origins of Pickleball This sport was born in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, USA. The "fathers" of Pickleball are Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum. Initially, they created this game as a summer recreational activity for their families, but its simplicity and high level of connectivity helped Pickleball quickly spread worldwide.
Although it looks quite similar to Tennis, Pickleball possesses distinct characteristics:
Court Size: A Pickleball court is much smaller (about 1/3 the size of a Tennis court), requiring players to run shorter distances while still moving flexibly.
Paddles and Balls: Pickleball paddles are small, light, and solid (no strings). The balls are made of hard plastic with holes and fly slower than Tennis balls, making them easier for players to control.
Pace: Matches are often fast-paced, requiring good hand-eye coordination rather than pure muscular strength.
More than just entertainment, Pickleball offers significant health benefits:
Improves Cardiovascular Health: Continuous movement helps enhance endurance.
Good for Joints: It puts less pressure on joints compared to Tennis, making it suitable even for seniors.
Reduces Stress: The strong community connection helps relieve tension and improve mood.
Burns Calories: Supports weight control and promotes a fit physique.
4.1. The Grip
The most common grip is the Continental Grip (holding it like a hammer). Keep your grip firm enough but not too tight so that your wrist remains flexible when handling fast shots.
4.2. Scoring
Only the serving side can score points.
A standard match is played to 11 points and must be won by at least a 2-point margin.
In doubles, each team has two service turns (except for the very first service turn of the match) before the serve passes to the opponent.
4.3. The "Kitchen" Rule (Non-Volley Zone)
This is the 7-foot (2.13m) area from the net. Players cannot hit a volley while standing in this area. This rule prevents players from executing overly powerful smashes right at the net, making the game more technical and durable.
Participants Pickleball is for everyone—from children and youth to the elderly. However, if you have serious knee or shoulder injuries, you should consult a doctor before engaging in high-intensity training.
Necessary Gear To get on the court safely and professionally, you need:
Pickleball Paddle: Choose one that fits your skill level (Newbies should choose a 16mm core paddle at V-Lab).
Pickleball Shoes: Shoes with good traction that support lateral movement to avoid ankle sprains.
Apparel: Stretchy, moisture-wicking clothing.
